“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” I am borrowing this phrase, which is attributed to Albert Einstein, because I think it would make the perfect tagline for the Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer. This is the latest model from Nomos Glashütte, presented at the last Watches and Wonders show. With that, I confirm my weakness for the German brand, which shines through in my other articles dedicated to it.

Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer: clever watchmaking from Nomos

I will return to the opening sentence. Creativity, intelligence and fun are three words that encapsulate the philosophy of Nomos Glashütte, and it is these words that will guide you through the following text. Since 2021, Nomos has been constantly expanding the Club Sport neomatik collection, starting with the first reference: the 42 mm Date. Since then, a new case size has been added to the brand’s sportiest line every year.

The Nomos Club Sport neomatik is now available in 34, 37, 39 and 42 mm sizes. Each model features a soleil dial in a colour that varies depending on the size. Until now, however, no complications were available apart from the date display on the 42 mm version, so the line was mainly characterised by time-only watches. The new Nomos Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer marks a definite change of gear.

Worldtimer in Saxon Sauce

Nomos Glashütte has had a sophisticated world timer in its collection since 2011: the Zürich World Time. Since then, the company has produced several limited editions of this watch. Thanks to its elegant aesthetics and special complication, it has become a classic aimed at a certain type of enthusiast. Now, after 14 years, the time has come to offer a sportier alternative. Nomos has done just that with the Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer. That is where the intelligence lies.

You want to pair a model with a proven track record of success and a clearly defined customer profile. This model is at the top end of the Nomos price range. Choosing a watch with a completely different flavour and target audience reinforces technical competence and position. Doing so with a complication that shares only the same function, but is entirely new in terms of engineering and display, demonstrates intelligent marketing.

The dials of the Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer

And what about the fun? Take a look at the range of dials offered by Nomos Glashütte for the Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer to find it. There is a silver version and a blue version, both with a galvanised sunray finish. In the silver model, this finish is rhodium-plated. These two dials represent the current collection.

However, alongside them, the brand is presenting six others. Only 175 pieces of each of these six colourful versions, which do not have a soleil dial, will be made. Each is characterised by a distinctive name and colouring. Canyon, Dune, Glacier, Jungle, Magma and Volcano take inspiration from natural landscapes. This is a subtle and amusing reference to the essence of every worldtimer watch: a hypothetical voyage of discovery around the world, from one time zone to another.

With such a wide range of colours on display, it’s almost as if we’ve gone back to Watches and Wonders 2024, when the brand presented 31 versions of the Tangente 38 Date. Just like then, these limited editions of the new Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer embody Nomos’ unique approach and are fascinating. This places fun alongside mechanics. In an industry like watchmaking, which often takes itself too seriously, a sense of humour is a breath of fresh air.

The Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer? It can be done

I will save the captions for a more in-depth look at the aesthetics and mechanics of the Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer. Here, I will share one final consideration with you. I am not trying to convince you of my idea, but rather to stimulate you to form your own opinion. This consideration is about price. You just can’t find a Worldtimer with this level of mechanics and finish for less than €4,000 − the Zürich from Nomos costs almost €1,000 more, €3,940. The same price applies to the six limited editions and the two from the current collection. Aren’t we returning to the concept of intelligence?

A provocation. At Watches and Wonders 2025, I noticed that most brands seem intent on occupying higher and higher price brackets, despite the fact that market indicators are not all that encouraging. Of course, there are the preciousness of the materials and the costs of research and development to consider. But in luxury – and thus also in watchmaking – once prices are raised, there is no turning back. In this case, we have a watch that is new in both its aesthetics and mechanics. These innovations must have cost Nomos money to implement. Or did they?

Therefore, creating something new and well-made at a reasonable price seems possible. I don’t think you have to be a practical Saxon to achieve this, especially since we’re talking about a medium-sized manufacturer. Perhaps all that is needed is to appeal to those who would like to buy certain watches out of true passion but who are frustrated by how unattainable they are becoming. Intelligence, even in this case? No, just common sense.
